Matt Bailie - Self-titled - Review, by Chuck Dauphin

CD cover for Matt Bailie

Jacksonville native Matt Bailie has had quite a career so far.  He’s enjoyed success on stage as well as on the small screen, with several roles in television series.  However, music has always been his first love, and he shows his undeniable talent for it with his debut album.

In addition to his vocal prowess, he also wrote or co-wrote six of the eleven cuts here, and did a fine job with those, as well.

I hear a little bit of a younger George Strait in Bailie’s approach, especially in performances like the sensual “Everyday You,” and the touching “Man Behind These Eyes,” which was written by Matt concerning the early passing of his father.  It’s one of the more powerful songs on the album.

He tackles a couple of staples of Country songs---loneliness and alcoholism in “Where Are You Now” and “Nothing Left For Me,” faring better on the latter song, which could very well be a single.  Also with a chance for radio airplay is the mid-tempo number “Feels Like Freedom,” which has a wide-open and breezy feel.

The album closes with perhaps the strongest song on the disc, “Only God Knows Why,” in which he offers perspective on some of life’s unanswered questions.  If this first album is any indication, I think we’re going to be hearing a lot from Matt Bailie, which would be a very good thing!

NEW ALBUM OF THE WEEK... 1/05/11

Logo for Reviewer

Cute country boy Matt Bailie is picking up hearts with his upbeat romancers on his new self-titled album. Bailie isn't messing around when it comes to getting the love message across. Perhaps it's because love is still fresh in his 23-year-old heart. Bailie has a real country twang, and it shows in his lyrics, too: "I'm just an old hat, old boots, old jeans / I bought you this beer here just in case / you'd talk to a blue collar boy like me... I'm gonna be somebody wait and see / I'm like an old Chevy truck with Cadillac dreams. He is able to capture character and play it out in song. This is just the beginning for Matt Bailie. His charming persona is going to get him a lot of fans, and he's keeping with a reliably tasteful style of country music in the background - just a touch of the blues goes a long way.

FIVE OF FIVE STARS –
Matt Bailie’s CD opens with his debut single, “Man Behind These Eyes,” which he co-wrote with Donnie VanZant and Aaron Scherz. It is a heartfelt, well-written song, which Matt delivers with expertise. He also co-wrote five other songs on the CD. Legendary artists, Donnie VanZant and Johnny VanZant show up as Music Director while some of Nashville’s finest musicians back Matt. Although recorded at several studios with several producers, there is no inconsistency here. Other favorite tracks on the CD are “This’ll Be A Memory” and the haunting “Only God Knows Why.” This project is country to the core and reminiscent of an early Garth Brooks. I am looking forward to watching Matt Bailie’s career grow!

INVENTOR OF DOGJAW SIGNS WITH EMC DogJaw & spokes pup, Ghost

FOR MARKETING PR SERVICES!

Mike Pyatt, inventor of the "DogJaw" an ergonomic dog feeding dish, designed to accommodate "your best friends who eat with their face," has signed with EMC for marketing/pr services. Inventor, Mike Pyatt says his R&D on the project began as he watched his dog struggle, twisting his head to eat the bites of food that were pushed to the edges of a standard round bowl.

Pyatt, a former Production Troubleshooter at McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, states "I knew there had to be a more comfortable dish design to resolve these issues, but when I searched for one I found I'd have to build it myself. Little did I know that the process would become such a labor of love."

Pyatt set his standards high. As a former Marine, he wanted this to be an American made product produced from safe, controlled materials. "We all remember the melamine scare which killed or injured many animals; an issue no pet parent need have exposed their loved-one to."

Additionally, Pyatt wanted a design that not only met the ergonomic needs of his best friend, Ghost, but would also be pleasing to the eye; a piece of art for the pet owner's home and not detract from their decor. After months of effort, the DogJaw was born.

Ghost, Pyatt's own shelter dog, has become the official "Face" for the DogJaw. "Ghost has piercing blue eyes that make him the perfect pitch-pup for DogJaw, a look you can't say no to," Pyatt expressed. "He's a big boy and spends quite a lot of time eating from his DogJaw. Rumor has it Ghost is looking for his own agent."

The DogJaw production shop is located in Fairview, TN. A new website, www.thedogjaw.com is under construction and will be available with additional information and direct order access.

Kelly Parkes Signs with EMC for Publicity Services!

Kelly Parkes

It can be difficult to gain notoriety in a town like Nashville, TN. Everybody in Music City wants to be somebody. It can also be difficult to gain notoriety in a smaller town like Lancaster, PA, but this is exactly what Kelly Parkes has done. In fact, Kelly’s not going to be somebody, she already is somebody. She’s somebody who, as a young girl, sang into a hairbrush when a microphone was not readily available. She’s somebody who has been involved in music since her first taste of performing the Star Spangled Banner in front of 1,800 people at age 9 – people began to take notice of “the small girl with the big voice.”

Kelly Parkes was raised in the small, farm town of Lititz, PA. Throughout her childhood, she was surrounded by family, friends and her first passion – horses. She and her horse, Frosty, competed in and won many competitions. When Parkes sets her mind to something, she sees it through to the end. This would become a recurring theme throughout her young life.

From a young age, music was a part of Parkes’ life. Parkes inherited her taste in music from her dad. She grew up with classic rock/pop – The Eagles, Led Zeppelin and Queen are still favorites (in fact, her favorite song of all time is Bohemian Rhapsody). Her mom is also a big music fan and even tries her hand at writing a song now and again. Her brother plays guitar. And, Parkes, well, she sings – as she says, “My voice is my main instrument,” though she does dabble with both piano and guitar. Like so many of us, she is still learning.

Slowly, but steadily, Parkes’ passion for singing, and music in general, grew. While her passion for horses remained strong, her passion for music became dominant.

At age 9, Parkes was asked to sing The National Anthem at a local country club’s 4th of July party. There were 1,800 people in attendance. To say that she was a hit would be an understatement. Other parties and events followed. Parkes was starting to gain notice. People knew who she was, whether she was on the stage or walking down the street. She was the little girl with the big voice.

By age 16-17, Parkes had developed and become comfortable with her own distinct style (though she had had no formal training aside from just a couple of voice lessons along the way), which is, as she describes, “both edgy and innocent ...a clash that works.” Work it does, as Parkes continued performing at parties and events throughout high school, gaining more notoriety with every performance.

After high school graduation, Parkes went off to college in Indiana. There she was introduced to the genre of the music that she fell in love with – country. She was inspired by the music of Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, Gretchen Wilson, Brad Paisley, Sugarland, Rascal Flatts and more. She often says, “I went off to college and came back a country singer.”

While in college, Parkes had several opportunities to perform – including singing The National Anthem at a Minor League baseball game – in front of a crowd of 5,000. She was also selected to perform in a college wide variety show put on by the college’s sororities and fraternities. All of her friends and family were there to support her. This particular event was a turning point for her. She didn’t just want to be a country singer, she was a country singer. Continuing the trend established early on, once Parkes makes a decision, she sees it through.

So, shortly after the variety show experience, Parkes entered the studio for the first time. She cut a record of covers – a selection of some of her favorite country songs. The response to this effort was overwhelming. People loved it. Extra copies were requested. The studio in Columbia, PA, where she cut the record, called Parkes and asked if she would consider moving back to Pennsylvania to cut additional songs. She would and she did.

Once back in Pennsylvania, Parkes got started immediately. She even began writing. She co-wrote her first songs, I Believe (a Christmas song), and Can’t Live Without You. Another song written for her, Me And The Boys, actually made it onto a benefit album called Music For Everyone. Despite these successes, she couldn’t help but feel that something was missing... She eventually concluded that she could better capture the sound she was seeking in Nashville, TN. She made the decision to move.

Just 20 years old, Kelly Parkes arrived in Nashville in 2008 and, for such a tiny girl, Parkes has already managed to accomplish a lot of big things with that equally big voice of hers. She secured an apartment, a job, enrolled in school and continues to sing, write and practice her instruments to further solidify herself as a country singer. And she continues to do it well.

Parkes has already booked gigs, including singing The National Anthem at The Bristol Motors Speedway for the American Diabetes Association (this event is particularly special to Parkes, as she is a Type 1 Diabetic). She has also managed to associate with some high profile songwriters, including Liz Rose (Rose co-wrote several Taylor Swift songs, among others). Cuts from other Nashville writers, Georgia Middleman and Mark Narmore, will be featured on her debut album, Nothin Good Ever Happens...After Midnight.

Parkes can’t wait to get on the stage and perform these songs. Like she says, “I’m a ham. I’ve always been a ham. I love what I do and I love that I get to do it...When I see someone on stage performing, I want to be the one up there performing.” Parkes can’t help it. She is what she is – a country singer.
